Free maps for Garmin devices

All maps provided on this page are free. The topographic data was gathered during the NASA Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRTM), missing data was supplemented from other sources. The program DEM2TOPO is used to generate contour lines from this data. The streetmap data is gathered by people like you in the OpenStreetMap project. It is licensed as Creative Commons (Attribution Share-Alike). The planet data is updated daily and split up by GeoFabrik. The program MKGMAP is used to translate the maps in the proprietary Garmin format.
Warning: The geographic information in these maps is incomplete and erroneous. Routing is not supported. The maps are provided "as is" without warranty of any kind. I guarantee neither for the quality of the maps, nor for their compatibility with Garmin devices.
Usage: For recent Garmin devices (offering USB Mass Storage Mode, e.g. 60CSx) just download the file with the ending "_gmapsupp_topo_img.zip", unzip it, and copy the enclosed "gmapsupp.img" to a folder named "Garmin" on the memory card of the Garmin device. For other devices, download the file "_topo_img.zip" or "_img.zip", unzip it, and copy the enclosed files to the device using SENDMAP. Using the maps in MapSource ist somewhat more complicated. New: Maps "from tiles" are generated from 1degree x 1degree tiles. They are not updated daily, but can be combined using SENDMAP. If the daily updates are not working for you, try these.
